About CBC

Our church

Core Values

1.  We hold the Bible to be central in everything we do (2 Timothy 3:16)

Because the Bible is the word of God it is eternally relevant. Therefore, no matter where we are, what we are doing, or who we’re with, we live believing the Bible is the final authority in every realm of life

2. We have a genuine reliance on prayer (Hebrews 4:16)

We agree with the Scripture that man apart from God can achieve nothing good for the glory of God, so we strive to come to him daily for strength, wisdom, and guidance

3. We believe our gifts were God-given to serve and bless others (1 Peter 4:10)

We believe God has designed each one of us to be good stewards and not owners of all the good gifts he has given. This is difficult many times because of the selfishness of our fallen nature, but by God’s grace we strive to serve rather than be served

4. We strive to live out the virtues of humility, self-sacrifice, and faithfulness (Philippians 2:3-8)

God is the most selfless, loving, and dependable person in the world and we try to reflect that to others in the way we live

5. We treat everyone with respect because all are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27)

Because all are made in the image of God we treat every person no matter the color of their skin, sexual orientation, or whether they’re in or outside of the womb with the inherent respect they deserve as divine image bearers

6. We are a church that values community and teamwork versus individualism (1 Corinthians 12:25-27)

God designed us to be connected to each other in this life. We believe without each other we can never accomplish the good work God has prepared for us. We are the body of Christ and individually members of it.

7. We have a strong emphasis on conversion (John 3:3)

We believe conversion is necessary for the forgiveness of sins, it’s a prerequisite to blessing, and naturally precedes our service to God

What We Believe

Bible
We believe that the entire Bible, consisting of the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments, is inspired by God, and is infallible and inerrant in all that it affirms, both in matters of doctrine and life, and in the fields of history and science. The Bible is our highest authority in all matters of faith and conduct (Ps. 19:7-9; 2 Tim. 3:16-17).

God
We believe that there is only one true God. God exists eternally in three Persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. He is the Creator of the universe, and the Redeemer and Judge of all mankind (Is. 43:10; 44:6; 45:21; Matt. 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14; Ex. 3:14; Gen. 1:26-27; Col. 1:14-22; Tit. 3:4-7; 2 Cor. 5:10).

Jesus Christ
We believe that Jesus Christ is God the Son incarnate, conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, and lived a sinless life. Jesus Christ is truly God and truly man. For the sin of mankind, He died on the cross to propitiate the wrath of the Father, and offered Himself once for all as an eternal sacrifice of atonement for our sins. He was dead, buried, and physically rose from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and now sits at the right hand of God the Father. Jesus Christ shall return imminently, personally, visibly, and publicly, to judge the living and the dead (Jn. 1:1-2, 14-18; Matt. 1:18-25; Heb. 4:14-15; Rom. 3:24-26; 5:9; Heb. 10:12; 1 Jn. 2:2; 1 Cor. 15:1-3; Heb. 10:12; 12:2; Matt. 24:44; 25:13, 31-46; Ac. 1:11; Rev. 1:7; 20:11-15).

Holy Spirit
We believe that the Holy Spirit convicts sinners of their sins and their need of salvation, regenerates those who repent of their sins and trust in Jesus Christ for their salvation, baptizes them into the Body of Christ, dwells in them and seals them for the assurance of their salvation, gives them gifts to build up the Church, empowers them for Kingdom ministries, and fills them as they yield to His guidance to produce a life of godliness (Jn. 16:7-11; Tit. 3:5; Jn. 3:3-8; 1 Cor. 12:13; Rom. 8:9; Eph. 1:13-14; Rom. 12:3-8; 1 Cor. 12-14; Eph. 4:7-16; 1 Pet. 4:10-11; Ac. 1:8; Gal. 5:16, 25; Eph. 5:18).

Salvation
We believe that all have sinned, separated from God, deserving His wrath and judgment. The only way to be forgiven, saved, and reconciled with God is to repent and to trust in Jesus Christ alone as Savior (Lk. 19:9; Rom. 3:23; Eph. 2:1-3; Rom. 2:5; Jn. 3:16; Ac. 2:38; 4:12; Rom. 6:23; 10:9-13; 5:9-11).

Church
We believe that the Church is the people of God including all who repented and trusted in Jesus Christ for salvation throughout history. The Church exists to glorify God through worshiping God, evangelizing non-believers, discipling believers and witnessing to the world (1 Cor. 6:20; 10:31; Jn. 4:23-24; Matt. 28:18-20; 5:16).

Marriage
We believe that marriage is between one man and one woman only. (Gen. 2:24; Matt. 19:4-5).

Our History

Chinese Bible Church of West Los Angeles was founded on January 6, 1975 by Rev. Philip Lee and a group of brothers and sisters who love our Lord Jesus Christ. Rev. Philip Lee was originally associated with the Evangelize China Fellowship, founded by the late Rev. Andrew Gih. Since the founding of Chinese Bible Church of West Los Angeles, we have not belonged to any denomination and remained an independent Bible-believing church, which seeks to build and govern the church according to biblical principles.

In July 1992, Rev. Philip retired as our pastor. Now the church is under the leadership of pastoral staffs and the members of our church board. By God’s abundant grace, we grew from a church of ten-plus members to a church of more than two hundred people. Due to our proximity to UCLA and Santa Monica College, a high percentage of our church is made up of college students. Because of this, we have experienced a high turnover rate over the years, yet every year we come to see many commit their lives to Jesus Christ. As these students complete their college education, they return to China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and all over the United States where they continue to serve the Lord in local churches.

Our weekly gatherings include: Chinese Sunday Worship Service, English Sunday Worship Service, Adults Sunday School, Children Sunday School, Chinese Prayer Meeting, English Prayer Meeting, and fellowship groups for different ages and language groups; all are designed to help us grow in our faith. By God’s grace, it is our desire that we will all obey the commands of our Lord Jesus Christ with unity, love one another, and testify for God’s grace.
